# When to Change Winter Tires?

The O-to-O rule and what you need to know in Switzerland.

## The O-to-O Rule

In Switzerland, the well-known "O-to-O rule" applies: From **October to Easter** you should drive with winter tires. This rule of thumb has proven itself over years and provides good guidance.

## Why Winter Tires Are Important

Winter tires offer significantly better grip than summer tires at temperatures below 7°C. This is due to:

-   **Special rubber compound**: Stays elastic even in cold weather
-   **Sipes in the tread**: Interlock with snow and ice
-   **Deeper tread**: Better water drainage

## Legal Regulations in Switzerland

There is no general winter tire requirement in Switzerland. **But beware**: Anyone who drives with unsuitable tires in winter conditions and causes an accident must expect partial liability.
